The Pocket Cinema Camera shelled by Thomas Garret

I met Thomas Garret through the large canvas, Photo talented director based in New York and we sympathized as I enjoyed doing it a few times so here's an article that 2 objectives, 1 do you know a talent, 2 talk about a camera that is a little center of attention the moment.

Because Blackmagic totally forgotten me, maybe because I did not say enough good things about the WB Film Camera on my blog and social networks, I thought that this trust “review” a friend who is more than enough fan of the Micro mount 4/3 was a good idea …

here is the little film he made in New York with BMPC

Let the pen mister Thomas

Enfin je reçois ma black magic pocket cinema camera !

With its promise of mini alexa in the case barely bigger than a smartphone with a superb mount m43 active, tien t it promises ?

My test to determine the capabilities of the camera in

real shooting condition.

Short in real life and not just in the studio.

promising incredible quality with al use the Apple ProRes codec and during a future update directly from RAW

S The recording made on SD card in full HD with 10bit rate of picture 23.99 24 25 30

and also to a timelapse function.

Getting Started

As long as a iphone 5 a little higher and almost twice as thick ( excluding the grip )

the camera and rather compact, it deserves its name pretty well "pocket" has pancake mostly associated optical.

Weight level, it still weighs his 355grammes without optical.

The quality is good with a metal chassis and plastic key veloute.

The grip is well proportioned which ensures a good grip.

J did note, however, a very light bleeding of the LCD backlight on the various models that I could have on hand ...

nothing serious but a good use..

We regret the SD slot in the battery compartment and not on the side of the camera.

the connectors positioned on the left side are relatively complete with :

a Lanc socket

a headphone jack

a microphone jack

du mini hdmi to

an outlet 12v external power

the back of the camera is a large screen is of 3.5 inches ( when on a dslr ...) and 9 Buttons with conventional directional pad with an OK button and four function buttons :

un power button,

un menu button,

an iris button that activates the automatic exposure adjustment of the camera

a focus button which can either trigger activates the autofocus or focus peaking.

_DSC5956 _DSC5957

Not being a big fan of peaking I didn t expect much of this function, which I have always been for me one more gadget creating mostly more confusion than precision.

Well I have been very pleasantly surprised by the implementation that black magic has succeeded in making

It is simply excellent and provides more real in the use of manual optical.

on top the record button and a play button both next and previous buttons

or is the iso button ?

If black magic hand of a good intention : minimize buttons to simplify use, a little way apple.

In fact some very annoying things stand, most of which fortunately can and I hope will be corrected by updating the firmware.

The most annoying is the isos tote settings at the bottom of a menu ... it takes at least 5 steps to change this setting

Menus

level autonomy after 1am on the internal battery will need to buy a package but they are not expensive

the issue of "small" and optical sensor is on with a report of X2.8 crop compared to the full-frame 35mm

the question arises optical especially for large angles.

_A070069

I have at my disposal optical level :

some modern classics and enjoying the AF

panasonic 14mm f2.5

panasonic 7-14mm f4.0

panasonic 14-140mm OIS f4.5-5.6

optical C-mount

compute 12.5mm F1.3

navitar 25mm f0.95

and my nikon optical significantly heavier..

peleng 8mm f3.5

rokinon 14mm f2.8

nikkor 28mm f2.8

nikkor 35mm f2.0

nikkor 55mm f1.2

nikkor 105mm f2.5

_DSC5935

and also a monstrous zoom canon 9.5-143 f1.8en B4 mount unfortunately vignette wide angle

_DSC5937

ca vignette….

for this test I used mainly me two optical c-mount the 14mm pancake and to a lesser extent the two zooms pana.

it is true that it lacks a bright optical around 6mm or 7mm in order to have a truly great compact angle..

_A070061

if some Panasonic offers an optical zoom stabilizer when a stabilizing effect on the sensor !!

Shooting :

The camera and compact and very easy to use.

relatively well balanced and very compact it is very convenient to carry around.

As against the lack of ND filter or lower sensitivity than 200iso is disadvantageous in daylight.

especially in the use of optical super16 watches or c mount to find a nd filter which has good size remains rather complicated.

The lack of optical or electronic viewfinder accessory fits, is sorely lacking in the sun even if the screen is reflective rest almost visible.

so there is no procedure for cleaning the sensor incorporates what may be a problem or at least ask for a more maintenance grows.

Finally, because of the report of crop 2.8 it would have been more useful to have a sensor stabilizes .

image quality

Move to more interesting.

This camera is it up to all the buzz that it has created ?

after the small frustrations of ergonomics I started to shoot and I note immediately on the same screen of the camera a very soft image.

watching the rushes on my computer c is the shock !

the pictures are beautiful !

the rendering of movement, color, grain ...

even expanded 4K on my screen 50pouces take good pictures

PA070036

For me after going to regret S16mm 35mmc movie and the video was particularly on the HVX200 which is grafted a 35mm mini kit to give a report “film "and in this Dslr with shallow depth of field but it always made video.

or a RED and clinical precision.

C is finally as Super16mm shooter with the advantages of digital.

and though many are decrying the camera in low light

I do not know how the templates are isos but it seems that the native of 800iso bmpcc is closer to a 1600isos on dslr

has 800iso noise is very reasonable and feels more like a grain

meme 1600iso noise is present but still very grainy.

it is far from the blue colored patches appearing on dslr

the goods ProRes

al direction I have the impression that even lowering the sensitivity 200isos it remains around what would be a 400isos

suddenly in broad daylight with a very present sun ND filters are needed ...

he'll have to find filters for my mount optical c ....

and even say ProRes

the possibility of catching a particular stage underexposed or missing light

so that al the perfect very dark screen image up the expo post we discover that all is well the colors details !!

incredible !!

To conclude

Even if I really like a hybrid device camera / video camera as the series of GH pana or 5D, d800 and consort

I must say that I completely fell in love with this camera.

with its cinematic, his native ProRes recording and m43 mount a 1000$ it's really an excellent choice

at the default it should be noted

the absence of physical nd filter or even digital ( big 50 ?)

absence sensor cleaning

the lack of viewfinder or even an accessory viewfinder type zacuto.

is the attitude a bit at the limit of amateurism blackmagic who announced with great fanfare a product available in May for July

and provides a product Dropper still early October ....

Strongly put a firmware update and V2 4k with viewfinder, stabilisateur et nd intègre 😉 ( one can dream ...)

ARRI Alexa VS Red One Mx … suite …

The long awaited sequel to the comparative test conducted at Etretat in the company of Matthew Misiraca the photo is going on Camera-forum at this address, You are invited to vote for your favorite image.

http://www.camera-forum.fr/index.php?/topic/6846-suite-du-test-alexa-vs-red-mx/

estrait a post of director of photography is Matthew and that was the image of this project :

“Accompanied by Emmanuel Pampuri, Thibaut Petillon, Michael Lagerwey, Armel Nknuidji and myself we looked at different pictures of the two cameras on the Dav Vinci Resolve

Personally, the two cameras are equal is really perfect hair c… found there a difference to the point where we knew what to what was … The sharpness (details) the two cameras are identical “

My personal view on the matter is that ARRI has worked in the grain of the development taking into account the past. Our collective unconscious, our tastes are forged over a century of silver image, This is because most of us prefer the rendering “soft film” the Alexa.

For my part I prefer the RED 2 things, the definition, I like it but the feeling of more modeling, more depth, more relief. The image of Alexa has an indescribable too “solid color” it can be said as Matthew related to Log C that crushes a little too dynamic, and the sudden we would lose a bit light in the middle. It will probably be a different rendering when we can work with the famous ARRI Raw.

Panasonic Lumix GH2, it is terrible !

I finally a GH2, and even that Santa brought me a f:0,95 Voigtländer 25mm in !!! I had not had time since the return of Osaka to test for real GH2, it's done. Party at Etretat in the company of a team to match Camera ARRI Alexa / Red One MX, I took with me my precious.

What a treat, this evolution of GH1 is a real success. My first contact with the pre-production model was already exciting but the model series confirms my feeling my first.

Aside from this ABERant choice 1080i50 which deprives us of a 1080p25 Mode, but I am hopeful, the right people are contacted Panasonic and the information is already asleep and rise to Japan.

1080p24 mode is a pure marvel, I am totally amazed by the quality of the images produced, less than 1500 euros is a diabolical camcorder coupled with a copy camera. The value for money is simply amazing. Brief, you'll understand, I am charmed by the GH2 !

I put a damper on the general enthousiasm about the fashion crop 1:1 which seems to me really noisy and loses latitude. I will continue to grumble against the fact that Panasonic has changed format battery, I do what my 6 batteries GH1 / GF1 ? of schoolchildren ?

Otherwise I liked in particular

  • The improved viewfinder.
  • The convenient touch screen to instantly point or desired.
  • The speed of the AF really improved with Surtour 14/140
  • The overall look of the video image
  • The compression quality AVCHD 24MB in 24p (why not offer other modes ?)

This is not true Making Of this shoot to be directed by Olivier Heraud to whom I lent my 5D for this shoot.

I even made a small comparison test on the latitude with the 5D mkII but I will tell you later in the meantime here is the video I made for this shoot.

100% images are shot in GH2, no color correction, editing in Final Cut 7 in ProRes LT, encodage et dans comrpessor just.

RED One MX / ARRI Alexa … tournage demain

Nikon D7000, grip …

First know that it is with great pleasure that I received there is little a phone call from Nikon that I proposed to test the new guy. A few days after a first contact friendly, here I am delivered from the D7000.

The handling of this new case is very nice, He exudes strength and the grip is excellent. We feel we have a tough tool in the hands. Side orders this is the same, the positioning of buttons is rather well thought out and their use appears to be fairly easy. The viewfinder is nice and the display of the grid and Colima superimposed AF gives him a small side “for”. If we did a little tour of it soon realized that the traditional Compact Flash port given way to 2 slots SDXC, the risk of offending those with lots of CF cards. For my part I take my hat off to notte good idea to have added the functionality of recording two ways raid 1 (mirror) on 2 cards, This allows you to add security but also to deliver faster customer hurry. You can also save the raw example of a map of the JPEG on the other, bravo !

On the software side, we have already found that Nikon is moving in the right direction by offering an intuitive interface, while allowing to go very far in the possibilities of customization is always full and the informed user will be filled.

So I received the kit D7000 version of the 18/105 and a 50mm f:1,4. I must say that the plastic frame of the zoom 18/105 may leave a bitter taste to all aficionados of the brand yellow, it can be tough even if it is also doubtful but it's not very serious and you saw that the price you pay … bof ! When was 50mm f:1,4 is a gem !

Note that Nikon changed its range since the D7000 replaces the D90, but eyeing a few on the market provided with expert D300s, get there a successor or should it take with the D7000 as a case supposed to meet customers D90 and D300 ?

I will not dwell too much on the photo part is excellent and has been commented many times in the press and on internet. So I'll focus on the video portion. I await the D7000 as a true messiah, Nikon broke new ground as the first drawing with the D90 the first DSLR offering video on the market in October 2008, as many people like me were disappointed by the feature that leaves a sense of unfinished business.

LiveView mode switches from any mode video picture. Rather clever but would rather keep a video mode with specific settings from. Other flat, no 1080p25 ?! but what happens now in the minds of those who design these products ? You did not realize that professionals had a passion for your case to use it in production for television ? In Europe must be the liver 25 i / s !!!

The 24p is great for film, but this is not the will of all to finish in the dining room ! After Panasonic and Aber of GH2 that fate as 1080p24 or 1080i50 of it continues along the same lines … I do not get it, and it put me in a foul mood !

After the rant, the video portion of the D7000 is no doubt that Nikon has done better since the beginning ! The launch of D90 at the time, they had opted for a Motion JPEG codec of another time and a resolution in Half tint (720p24 only !). D7000 finally meets today with our expectations with a more modern codec. Nikon has made the same choice technique Canon, a QuickTime H.264, but not at the same rate. The player QTimer X my machine shows a flow 25 mb / s. The quality of the signal processing is rather good, can grow up 1600 iso without much concern, noise is not too annoying, but we left wanting if we compare with the photo mode. A picture is absolutely amazing, Sony Exmor sensor that, I recall that is the same as in the Alpha 55 Sony and Pentax K5 combined with the know-how and processing power of the processor makes prowess Nikon Photo, video we are not at the top but it's well and progress should be welcomed. The other thing I have to acknowledge is that the AF can be used in video mode, there or Nikon also offers a super efficient autofocus camera they were able to do something very corect video. Side the large possibility of not setting and still no headphone jack (Photocam any on the market today has this feature, one wonders why ? So next audio settings, we have the right to 3 levels of sensitivity or an automatic gain, and a microphone jack to record in stereo.

Next screen is good but why not about the direction as do more and more manufacturers ? It's still handy.

Another thing that annoys, exposure settings are not changed during that run, and f-stop wheel is silent when you're in live view, a peak, must quit the LiveView to vary the f-stop when you are in manual ! I hope this will be fixed soon in a firmware update.

My conclusion is that the K5 as part of Pentax camera is pretty good, next video is not as bad as the K5 but of course it is not on top of what we expect from a brand like Nikon. The 7D Canon came out a year ago and the update of the 5D mkII has set the bar a little high probably ? I did not think it would be so hard to meet the concurrency with a Canon product at least equal to what already exists in red. As you can see so it's a little disappointing, Not that this is not good, progress is notable but I expected a real little slap and there is still some way to go. Have to wait over the D700 and see what the yellow mark is going to lay full frame.

I made some pictures with the D7000, miles excuse is not good but the guy is sick 40 fever, and must make the case for Nikon. You will see that it is rather well until 1600 iso but this little collage is not yet super yavait things to do in Lyon with the Festival of Lights this week.
